Phase Separation in Polymer Solutions Induced by Shear

چکیده
We numerically investigate nonlinear regimes of shear-induced phase separation in entangled polymer solutions. Use is made of a time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau model describing two fluid dynamics of polymer and solvent. As a new dynamic variable a conformation tensor is introduced to represent chain deformations. Above the coexistence curve a dynamical steady states is attained, where fluctuations are enhanced on various spatial scales. At relatively large shear elongated polymer-rich regions form a transient network supporting most of the stress. Because such a network is continuously deformed in shear flow, the shear stress and the normal stress difference exhibit large fluctuations. In two component viscoelastic fluids the network stress can act on the two components asymmetrically. Then there arises dynamical coupling between stress and diffusion

Shear-induced structure in polymer-clay nanocomposite solutions.
The equilibrium structure and shear response of model polymer-clay nanocomposite gels are measured using X-ray scattering, light scattering, optical microscopy, and rheometry. The suspensions form physical gels via the "bridging" of neighboring colloidal clay platelets by the polymer, with reversible adsorption of polymer segments onto the clay surface providing a short-range attractive force. ...
متن کاملFracture phase separation.
Here we report novel phase-separation behavior accompanying mechanical fracture ("fracture phase separation"), which is observed in polymer solutions. Surprisingly, mechanical fracture becomes a dominant coarsening process of the phase separation. The transition from viscoelastic to fracture phase separation corresponds to the "ductile-to-brittle transition" in fracture of materials under shear...
متن کاملShear-induced phase separation in solutions of wormlike micelles.
Polymer solutions in the vicinity of the theta-point are known to undergo shear-induced turbidity or phase separation. The present study shows that a similar phenomenon also occurs for certain wormlike micellar solutions. Wormlike micelles are the self-assembled counterparts of polymers and are characterized by their ability to reversibly break and recombine. In the system of interest, the mice...
متن کاملFabrication of Gelatin Scaffolds Using Thermally Induced Phase Separation Technique
Gelatin is considered as a partially degraded product of collagen and it is a biodegradable polymer which can be used to produce scaffolds for tissue engineering. Three-dimensional, porous gelatin scaffolds were fabricated by thermally induced phase separation and freeze-drying method. Their porous structure and pore size were characterized by scanning electron microscopy. Scaffolds with differ...
متن کاملViscoelastic phase separation in shear flow.
We numerically investigate viscoelastic phase separation in polymer solutions under shear using a time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau model. The gross variables in our model are the polymer volume fraction and a conformation tensor. The latter represents chain deformations and relaxes slowly on the rheological time giving rise to a large viscoelastic stress. The polymer and the solvent obey two-flui...
